ABOUT US

OUR STORY

The Hopewell House Bike & Bed is the culmination of our love of people and cycling. We traveled from the DC area for years to ride our bikes in a safe and less congested area. We fell in love with the Shenandoah Valley – the beautiful scenic roadways, the people, the food, and the fresh air while pedaling miles throughout the valley.

We began searching for a house from which we could ride our bikes out of the driveway into the beautiful valley. We were looking for a weekend place that would become our forever home. When we viewed the house for the first time, literally the first thing we said as we entered the front door was, “This is beautiful; it feels just like a Bed & Breakfast!” Clearly, that idea never went away and morphed from the idea of a traditional Bed & Breakfast, to more closely align with our passion for cycling into a “Bike & Bed.”

As we retire with nearly 70 years of combined federal service, we decided it was time to share our home and the valley with cyclists and their friends and family. Our hope is people enjoy the beauty of valley, slow a bit to relax and take a break from the daily hustle and bustle.

MEET THE OWNERS

Alice & Kevin are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and experience about cycling and the local area.  They both have their favorite rides, places to eat, visit, and shop. Lilly is an active pup and aging gracefully with the exercise she gets walking about town and chasing squirrels from window to window and greeting school children and walkers from the porch.  Their home is unique in it offers comfortable accommodations, a lovely porch for relaxation, and a short walk to local restaurants, breweries, and shops.

Alice is a retired federal executive beginning her career as an Army Military Police private. She’s been cycling about 17 years and enjoys climbing more than descending rapidly. The Shenandoah Valley offers many opportunities for such climbing but on days when you need to ramble, there are great rides just out the backdoor. Alice enjoys people, wine, shopping, and working out in the gym, hiking, and of course loves her cycling! She can be found sipping wine and holding Lilly on cool summer evenings in the screened porch.

Kevin is a retired Army Officer who has been cycling for more than 20 years. His friend Bob Marsh introduced him to road biking and the Shenandoah Valley. Venturing out to open roads, he has ridden the Shenandoah Valley end to end finding several off the beaten path routes. Kevin rode his bike the entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway unassisted. He recalls the friendly people he met along the way, the beauty of the country, and tough climbs. Kevin is a cycling ambassador for BikeVA and a League of America Bicyclists cycling instructor. He enjoys cycling, cycling, cycling and wine. You will find him hanging with Alice and Lilly summer evenings.

MEET LILLY

Lilly welcomes all guests to the Hopewell House Bike & Bed. She is a 13-year-old Bichon Frise and greets all guests with her tail wagging.  Lilly enjoys lounging in the windows in the sun room, walks about town, sleeping, and meal time. We do ask that no treats are given to her.

Lilly has travelled with her Mom & Dad to many places to lounge, while they cycle. She loves hanging out with her Mom & Dad!
